The karate program at the Allegheny County Budo-Kai is an adult program that provides detailed instruction in a wide variety of striking, kicking, and blocking techniques. The techniques, instruction, and training have not been "watered down" as often seen in schools that primarily teach children.
The techniques taught in the karate classes at the South Hills Martial Arts Dojo are practiced in one of three formats, each format having a different focus. The first format of training is Basics, where repetitive practice of the techniques is used to develop the proper body mechanics necessary to maximize power. Bag work is a part of this training. The second format of training is Kata, or Forms practice. Kata training consists of practicing sequences of techniques designed as an appropriate response to a particular attack. Kata practice serves as a method to practice self-defense techniques in the absence of a training partner. The third format of training is Kumite, or Fighting. This type of training includes free-fighting (sparring) and practicing pre-arranged self-defense techniques with a partner.
Since a large portion of the karate classes consists of group practice, the classes are structured and fairly formal. The importance of discipline is stressed to develop mental toughness and perseverance.
The training atmosphere in the karate classes is formal yet friendly. Since the focus of the training is on self-defense and development of character, not competition, the environment is one of mutual assistance rather than one where students feel they have to prove themselves at someone else’s expense.
